GIDBlog Analytics Error

I made a silly mistake setting up the Google Analytics account for this web site, and I only recently figured it out.

If you manage a web log here at GIDBlog, then you know you can view the stats for this site via Google Analytics. Anyway, for quite some time, there seemed to be no traffic to any of the blogs except one, at least according to the reports available at Google Analytics.

What happened was that I had somehow entered a include pattern filter — I guess I was trying to figure things out and forgot to remove the setting — which resulted in only stats to just one blog being reported, ignoring all others.

Since yesterday, I removed this ‘filter’ and from now on, the reports should be accurate.

That’s odd. I have a sore back and couldn’t figure out why….
Must have been from carrying the heavy load. :)

But seriously now. I am curious to see how the numbers ramp up. What are there, seven of us now. We should see a jump now that everyone is in the game.

Considering that we started this web log site slightly over a month ago, I think we’re not doing too bad.

The site is growing at a healthy rate, content-wise, i.e. about 2 “stories” per day average. All we need is another 3 or 4 active bloggers on board and the growth rate for this site would surpass even that of GIDForums. Now, wouldn’t that be something!

:( I don’t know how to view the stats.

Do what I do, just look at the pretty graphs… :P

Seriously, I don’t spend a lot of time on Google Analytics usually. In other words, I don’t know much about it either.

The only thing that I use Google Analytics for is to find out which search engine is doing what for the site.

Well, here’s a brief overview of how to view the pretty graphs.
*The opening screen (”Dashboard”) is pretty self explanatory. It gives you a concise overview of the big things people care about: day-to-day graph of visitors, summaries of various visit paramaters, a map of where people are coming from, how they’re finding the site, and which pages are getting the most hits.
*In the left column you can drill down for more in-depth info for visitors, traffic sources, content, and goals. Goals are more for businesses since they are used to determine certain benchmarks, e.g. how many visitors complete a purchase or register.

There’s a lot of information there but in reality a lot of it is redundant across the pages. Perhaps the most useful tools are the keyword searches and referring sites. They help you tweak any keywords on the site (more difficult with blogs) and you can see how people are finding your site. If you’ll notice, the Firefox plugin “StumbleUpon” is a large traffic generator, currently ranked #4. This tool is simply a random Internet page generator, so a good chunk of the people visiting aren’t directly looking for our content.

Hope that answers some of your questions.
