Since I haven't heard back from Aaron, I think what I suggested to him must be correct -- it was the slow DNS lookups that was causing the problem.

The stats script at desilva.biz translates each unique (user) IP address to a host name at least once a day, for reporting purposes, and since all my sites use this particular script, it affected them all equally bad.

At least I learnt something new out of this unfortunate incident!</description>
